It's that time again... time to show what's on your design wall. To see what others are working on go to Judy's blog here.
Here is what I have been working on...
A Quilts for Kids quilt.
They always send me the cutest fabrics.
I think these are great for a girl.
Cupcakes!
My lovely sister-in-law asked me to make her a new purse/wallet. She wanted it in denim and gave me an old pair of Levi's jeans to use.
She loves her old one and really had a hard time letting me take it, but I needed it to look at while making the new one.
This thing has 20!, yes 20, pockets in all.
It really is a nice size.
Big enough to hold the necessary items, like checkbook, credit cards, license, etc.
But small enough to fit into a bigger purse.
The little handles fits over the wrist if she needs to have her hands free.
I used a back pocket and the Levi's patch from the waist band for one of the outside pockets.
I used the zipper fly for the other outside pocket.
I used 3 different blue fabrics and 1 red bandana type print for the inside.
3 zippers - I do not enjoy putting in zippers.
There are 2 sides to this purse. One side opens flat and has credit card sized pockets. The other side opens to a zippered pocket and several open pockets.
The two sided zip closed and the zippers are attached to each other at the center.
The seams were really thick and my machine would not handle all that fabric so there was a lot of hand sewing.
But she is such a sweet person that I didn't mind doing it.
But, please, don't ask me to make another one!

Design Wall Monday
On my design wall today... not much.
Last week was fair week for us.
I took 2 quilts. Amish with a Twist got 2nd place in the Quilts, Machined Quilted category. I was really hoping for some constructive comments. There were none.
I am pretty pleased with 2nd place. I really wasn't expecting anything.
I also took the Little Twister quilt in the Quilt, Child Size category. It didn't place.
All the quilts were lovely. I enjoy looking at other people's work. The Grand Champion quilt was done with Christmas fabrics and hand quilted. Beautiful. I wasn't able to get photos.
There isn't room to display the quilts hanging up.
They are folded and placed in glass showcases.
They are protected this way, but I think it is a shame they
cannot be displayed in their full glory.

My son took 2 chickens. He got 3rd and 4th place ribbons.

Design Wall Monday
I have been working on 2 projects this week.
Another Quilts for Kids.
They send me the cutest fabrics.
This one is cupcakes.
Looks yummy!
Some little girl will really like this, I think.
Also, Serene Glow.
Here is is in progress.
I do not care much from browns.
I like the colors in the center blocks.
I like how the browns gradually go from dark to light.
It is growing on me.
My husband really likes it.
He told me last night that he thinks
he might like it even better than
Amish with a Twist!
Last night I got it put together except for the borders
which I will add today.
I have a bunch of corners that were trimmed
off in the process of making the Flying Geese units. Not sure what I will do with those yet.
Amish with a Twist is completely finished.
I have the fair tag attached.
I just need to put it in the clear plastic bag.
I am also taking this Little Twister quilt.
Fair entries can be dropped off starting Wednesday evening.
Judging is Thursday morning.
My husband is expecting ribbons.
I am hoping for constructive comments.

On the Needles
Second verse, same as the first.
Meaning my On the Needles post this week is the same as last week. No new knitting done.
I have, however, been busy working on quilts.
More about that later.

From This.... to...
Started with this...
and ended up with this...
Little Twister 5 inch blocks |
and ended up with this...
Little Twister |
Back |
I was in a local quilt shop and saw their samples using the Little Twister ruler. I really liked them so I got the ruler. This quilt uses fabric all from my stash. I didn't purchase anything for this.
Quilting close-up - Used Funky Feathers Groovy Board |
This quilt measures 43 X 45 inches. I used 132 five inch squares. I alternated light and dark. The scrappy border is made with the pieces leftover from cutting the pieces with the Twister ruler. I added the blue inner and outer border. The backing is a white on white heart print.
I think this would make a great baby quilt... or table topper... or wall quilt.

DWM Missed it again
Yesterday I picked my son up from basketball camp. Had to be there at 8 AM. It is an hours drive away. Then we met my husband at the sale barn that is 45 minutes from the town camp was at and
1 1/2 hours away from home. There is also a fabric shop in the town where the sale barn is. Since my son and I would arrive before my husband we had time to kill. Guess where we did that at!
I added more to my stash. The top fabric is to make a pillow for my son. He really likes deer and wildlife fabric.
Next, on the left, are stones, tile roof, brick and grass fabrics. I like to keep these just in case.
In the middle on top is a light batik. These are hard to find in my area so I like to pick some up when I see them.
Below the batik is a solid yellow, and to the right is solid green and a solid lighter yellow. I am hand quilting some vintage quilts for a friend and am hoping these work for bindings.
Nothing on my design wall right now, but I have
been working on Serene Glow.
I have the center units finished. And, I finished the Flying Geese units that will be the star points.
To make the Flying Geese units a square is laid on one side of the rectangle, a seam is sewn from corner to middle, and the excess is trim off the corner. Like this, (the one on top).
So now I have this pile of corner trimmings that I will probably sew into half square triangle units.
There will be some of the other fabrics left over. Hopefully enough for a small quilt - maybe a wall hanging or table topper.
I have also been busy quilting Amish with a Twist. It is off the frame and ready for the binding. Yay!

On the Needles
On my needles today are...
dish clothes. Only I left my knitting bag at my brother's house. He and his wife host a 4th of July potluck every year. It's so much fun to see everyone and the food is always wonderful. They usually do fireworks, but it is so dry where they live this year that they decided not to do them for the sake of fire safety. We didn't mind. The teenagers decided to drive to the local fireworks, but us old folks sat around outside and visited. We decided earlier to skip the parade, too. 100+ temps made that an easy decision! I always take my knitting - usually dish clothes because I don't have to pay much attention to them - with me. Forgot to bring it home, though. They live too far away to go just to retrieve the knitting. And, I have more needles and yarn so it can wait until I see them at Thanksgiving. Here are some dish clothes I finished earlier. I like to keep some on hand since they make nice little gifts, especially with a small bottle of hand lotion or bath gel.

Design Wall Monday
On my design wall today is
Serene Glow
The center blocks are a 36 patch. 36 1 inch squares. The center blocks finish at 6 inches. Just in case you wanted to know that.
I have the center blocks finished. Now I need to cut the rest.
I am doing some hand quilting in the evenings while my family watches the Olympic trials.
I do not know the name of this pattern. I am quilting it for a co-worker. It was pieced by her grandmother.
I pulled this scrappy zig-zag quilt off the frame yesterday.
I followed along with Judy L.'s feather lessons. I didn't make a Carpenters Square for that, but thought I could still practice on this. Awful! Let's just say I need LOTS more practice.
When I realized that this wouldn't be donated for the FFA Auction quilt this year I decided to do a little more practicing.
Some loops and straight lines in some of the triangles.
Some mussel shells.
Then my groovy board arrived so I thought I would practice that too. This quilt will stay here with me and keep me warm on a cold winter evening.
