Design Wall Monday

See what other quilters are doing at Judy's page.

On my wall...

Working on Barn Trail. Sometimes I don't like how it is coming together so I put it away for a while. I still need to add the fence which will have quilts hanging on it, leaves on the tree and pumpkins on the ground. I plan on giving this to my brother and his wife.

Blocks 28, 29 and 30 of the Civil War Sampler (on the left) and Scrappity-Do-Dah on the right.
I am making SDD for a chair cover quilt for my husband's chair.

For SDD squares are cut at 6 1/2 inches, cut into HST and a 1 1/2 inch strip is sewn in the middle. Then, the directions say to trim the block to 5 inches. I am able to trim mine to 5 1/2 inches. It seemed like a lot of waste trimming that much. The quilt will end up be bigger which is fine with me. I planned to make it bigger than the pattern anyway and now I won't have to cut as many squares and strips.

Blocks 31, 32, 33 and 34 of the Civil War Sampler. I am behind the rest of my group so I spent an afternoon choosing and cutting the fabric for the remaining blocks. Most of these go together pretty quickly. It is nice to be able to grab the next pile of cut pieces and start sewing when I have a few minutes.

Design Wall Monday

It's been a busy week.

I drove my son 3 hours (one way) to meet up with his friends for a summer camp he is working this week. We stopped for breakfast on the way, then some shopping at Scheel's before meeting his friends. On my way back home I stopped at Boline's to pick up some backing and batiks I need to complete a project.

I attended a graduation party for my niece. It was nice to see people I don't see very often. Proud of her for sticking with her education. She works part-time too so she is a busy girl.

Then I spend an afternoon baling hay.

In between all that I am trying to get my yard in shape. The weeds are starting to take over. We had a decent rain earlier in the week and the weeds came out pretty easily. But it has been so hot. I am taking a break from the weeds today.

Sunday is our day to go shopping. We start at the farm store, then to W*l-M##t, then to breakfast. It is usually kind of a lazy day for us since we don't get many of those. I did spread some mulch though. Then we visit my mother-in-law at the nursing home. She was very alert and verbal. She hasn't really spoken more than a few words in a long time. The nurses said she had been chatty all day.

I did work on some quilty things....

... another 6 inch block Fair entry.
The block on the left is one of the 365 Challenge blocks and is regular piecing.
The block on the right is paper pieced and hand appliqued. It can be found at
Quilter's Cache.

I am working on a new quilt for my husband's chair. The one he is currently using is getting pretty worn. He uses it to cover his chair to protect it. I like this scrappy pattern - Scrappity Do Dah - and wanted something that wasn't too light in color. I am using lots of my stash and scraps.

The HST piece on the right is made from left-over cut off triangles. My quilt group shares with save theirs and share them with me at our treats. I keep them by my sewing machine and use them as leaders/enders. Not sure what I will do with them yet, but I have an idea brewing!

A day late...

... this was suppose to post yesterday for Design Wall Monday, here, on Judy's page. But, once again, I was having computer/internet connection issues. I have decided this problem is mostly due to where I live. I think I live in an area that just does not have good service. We have used several different providers through the years. People that live in this area have the same problems we do. I just find it frustrating to have to pay for a service that doesn't deliver well.

My connection was so slow yesterday that I could not get photos to post to my page. I decided to save my page and wait until today to finish it. I couldn't even do that.

Anyway, here is what I have been working on for my county fair entries.
6 inch Quilt Block ...

This pattern is part of the 365 Challenge.

Tea Towels, set of three...

I had seen this fabric earlier this year and thought it was so cute. I like the cheerful colors and that it could be used all winter, not just at Christmas time.

I haven't decided yet if I will keep these or use them for gifting.

Quilter's Exchange block

Yesterday before I left on the quilty road trip I was able to get the fabric cut for the next Quilter's Exchange block. Today I got it pieced.

This is my block - Dancing Shoofly.

Here it is will all the blocks that have been completed so far.

I think there are 15 of us participating this time.

Quilty Road Trip!

My Quilter's Exchange group enjoys taking road trips. From ther

Yesterday we traveled to Kathy's Needle & I
Rantoul, IL

From there we went to Main Street Quilt Co. in Shelbyville, IL

And, then from there we went to the Fabric Cobbler in Forsythe, IL

Here are my purchases...

Tea Towel, from Needle & I. Wool pieces from Main Street Quilt Co.
I will add applique to this tea towel. I love the color!
I plan to do a wool applique project with the wool pieces - a snowman, perhaps.

From Needle & I
I have some cute farmer fabric that I think will work with the piece on the left.
I am working on a wall hanging project that has quilts hanging on a fence. I think this quilt block print will work for that.

These pieces (above and below) will get used in the Civil War Sampler and the 365 Challenge.
The triangle folded fat quarters are from Main Street Quilt Co. The flat folded fat quarters are from Needle & I.

I didn't make a purchase at Fabric Cobbler, but me friends did. She has a LOT of fabric in her store. We discovered that 70% of her business is internet sales.

All the stores had lovely fabric, nice collections and wonderful staff who were more than willing to help us find what we needed and match fabrics for those who asked for help with that.

Almost as fun as the stash enhancement is deciding where to eat. We all enjoy good food and that is one of the first things we discuss after getting into the car. We decided on Farmhouse Family Restaurant . We had the buffet. There was a nice salad bar and good selection of entrees and sides.

We had beautiful weather and a fun day.

Out my front door...

I love walking around my yard. Every day I see something new blooming.

I love these purple ones. And, the usually rebloom.

And, yes, those are milkweeds. I am allowed to let them grow as long as I remove the seed pods before they open. These are for the Monarch butterflies.

This lovely rose has a second bloom.

School's Out For the Summer!

The last two weeks seemed to go on forever. But, now it's over and I can get to quilting. I haven't been very motivated the last month so I am hoping that returns soon. I have lots to do!

Check out what other quilters are working on here on Judy's page.

I received the next Quilter's Exchange bag, but I haven't even looked in it yet.
I have been working on my mom's Blooming Star bed runner. I realized after I posted these pictures that the pink stars were sewn incorrectly. I took them apart and remade them. I had to cut new diamonds for part of the blocks.

They are now put together correctly and I am ready to add the borders.
I realized today that the backing was not part of the kit. Lucky for me my quilty friends and I have a fabric store trip planned for Wednesday. Hoping I find something suitable.

My son is now home, forever.
He finished his third, and final, year at Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. And, now he is home. Besides having visual impairments (yes, more than one) he is physically disabled (spina bifida) and a full-time wheelchair user. He also has some learning disabilities. All this makes finding a job very hard. I don't know what the future holds for him, but we have been checking into options for him.

During his last year at ISVI he took a welding class. I am pretty excited about this.

He is making metal art using horseshoes.
Things like this ...

 ... and this.

He had been taking orders from people at school and doing pretty well with them. But, now that he is home he needs equipment - a welder, cart, bottle of welding gas, other tools, supplies, etc.

These things cost money and take a little time to gather. He was able to find a slightly used, but in very good condition, welder locally. We have been getting some of the tools and other supplies he needs when we make trips to the farm stores. I hope he doesn't lose interest in this like he usually does and he is able to get enough orders to keep him busy.

I am a bit frustrated with the mentality that he, and other young people, seem to have in today's world. Instant gratification. He wants what he wants and he wants it now. There is no patience and wanting to save up for things that he needs and wants. The wants always come before the needs. My friends keep telling me that this is the way people his age think and he will outgrow it eventually. I hope so.
